GRANT WINANS BAUER, 92, of BAY HEAD, and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Monday, Dec. 12, at Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant, following a stroke. Born July 29, 1913, and raised in Linden, Grant graduated from Yale University in 1935, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from its Sheffield Scientific School. From 1935 to 1940, Grant was a staff reporter for the New Jersey Daily Journal, Elizabeth. From there, he moved to become editor of the Linden Observer. While attending the Graduate School of Engineering at Harvard in 1942, Grant served in the Army Signal Corps. He was a communications officer with the U.S.-British Air Force Headquarters in the China-India-Burma Theater and received an honorable discharge in 1945 as captain in the U.S. Air Force. After his tour of duty, Grant continued in the journalism field as publisher of the Union Register, NJ, and the Ocean County Leader, Point Pleasant Beach. Grant was a project engineer for the Signal Corps Engineering Labs, Eatontown, in 1952 and 1953. Living in the Shore area of New Jersey prompted his desire to change paths; he became a yacht broker and boat designer. His yacht business, the New Jersey Yacht Corp., based in Point Pleasant Beach, was his launching ground for the "Bay Head Skiff." These custom wood-hull boats were widely acclaimed for decades. He also was a dealer for many well-known yacht manufacturers, including Egg Harbor, Hatteras, Viking, Wheeler and Riva. Retiring from boat design in 1972, Grant continued in the yacht brokerage business. During the course of his career in the marine trades, Grant was president of the American Boat and Yacht Council and chairman of its Technical Board, president of the N.Y. Marine Trades Association, and treasurer of the Yacht Architects and Brokers Association. Grant was also past president of the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce. Grant held memberships in the Yale Club of New York City, the Manasquan River Golf Club, Brielle, the Bay Head Yacht Club, the Fort Lauderdale Golf Club and the Coral Ridge Yacht Club in Florida. One of the many organizations to which he contributed was Planned Parenthood in Monmouth County, where he served on their board.
Grant was predeceased by his sister, Janet Boak; his brother, Raymond Bauer; and his former wife, Dorothy Bellis Bauer. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Isabelle Johnson Bauer; his sister, Dorothy Fedor of Summit; his brother, Robert Bauer of Westfield; four children, Tanya Bauer of Anaheim, Calif., Isabelle Griesmyer of Painted Post, N.Y., Betsy Bauer of Sea Girt Estates, and Gregory Bauer of New York City and Bay Head; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Bay Head, or Planned Parenthood, Shrewsbury.
