Camp Acahela
Staff Neckerchief
Northern Pennsylvania Council
Camp Acahela was established by the Wilkes-Barre Council in
1919. Acahela means "At the joining of the Waters". The camp is composed of 234
acres. The name was chosen because the camp is located at the intersection of
the Lehigh River and Tobyhanna Creek. The camp was originally built along the
river. New camp building were later built on higher ground after the Army Corps
of Engineers announced plans to build a dam that would flood the lower part of
the camp. Many years later, the dam still has not been built, so the camp
continues to use the land along the river. Until 1991, Camp Acahela had been
offering both Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs. Councils that operated Camp
Acahela:
- From 1919-1924, the Wilkes-Barre Council
- From 1925-1969, the Wyoming Valley Council
- From 1970-1989, the Penn Mountains Council
- From 1990 to the present, the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council
